Vietnam Expands 45-Day Visa Waiver to 12 More Countries

Vietnam has extended its 45-day visa-free policy to 12 more countries, replaced certain earlier exemptions, and introduced a special waiver program for high-profile visitors to strengthen tourism and socio-economic cooperation.

12 Newly Added Countries

On August 15, 2025, Vietnam will take another significant step in opening its doors to the world. Citizens from Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland will be able to enter the country without a visa for up to 45 days.

This decision expands the current list of 13 nations already enjoying the same privilege – including France, Japan, and the United Kingdom – and reflects Vietnam’s commitment to creating easier access for international visitors while fostering stronger diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties. Twelve other countries, from Chile and Panama to nine of Vietnam’s Southeast Asian neighbors, will continue to enjoy visa-free entry for periods ranging between 14 and 90 days, maintaining close regional and intercontinental connections.

Changes to Previous Policies

The new regulation also streamlines existing rules. Government Resolution No. 11, issued in January 2025, which previously covered Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland, will be repealed and replaced by Resolution No. 229. By unifying these exemptions under one framework, Vietnam simplifies entry procedures for travelers and strengthens consistency in its tourism policy.

Special Visa Waiver Scheme

Beyond the broader exemptions, the Government has introduced Decree No. 221, effective August 8, 2025, offering a limited-term visa waiver to individuals whose presence is considered valuable to Vietnam’s socio-economic development.

Eligible guests include:

  • Dignitaries invited by top national leaders, from the General Secretary of the Communist Party to the State President, the Chair of the National Assembly, and the Prime Minister.
  • International scholars, scientists, professors, chief engineers, and leading digital technology specialists.
  • Investors and senior executives from major global corporations.
  • Cultural, artistic, sports, and tourism figures who inspire public goodwill.
  • Vietnam’s honorary consuls abroad.
  • Guests of prominent research institutes, universities, and large enterprises.
  • Other individuals may also be welcomed under this scheme at the discretion of the Minister of Public Security, ensuring flexibility to respond to opportunities for cooperation.
